Till when can i adjust my order specifications?

After submitting the final files, you will be asked to give your approval for production. With your approval, also send your final changes such as; delivery address, number of books, number of (colour) pages etc.

How do i approve the production files?

After submitting the final files, you will receive an e-mail asking for your approval for production. Please respond with your approval and also send your final specifications such as; delivery address, number of books, number of (colour) pages etc. if this differ from the portal.

My order has the status ‘expedition’?

This status means that the books are ready for shipment. The books will be collected one day before the delivery date (end of day) in your portal. After the pick-up, you will receive an e-mail with information from the carrier.

How do I access my portal?

After agreeing to your offer, you will receive an e-mail with the link and login codes. Use these to log in to your portal.

Can I change my details in my portal myself?

No. Send an email with changes to orders@ridderprint.nl quoting your name and order number.

Where do I find my ISBN?

If you have applied for an ISBN via the application form in your Ridderprint portal, you will find it on the ‘specifications’ page in your portal in about two days. If it is still not there after two days, please contact Riddderprint before sending a new request.

 

Where do I find my shipping details?

Log into your Ridderprint portal and click on ‘my order‘ and go to the ‘shipping details‘ page. Send any changes to orders@ridderprint.nl.

Can i submit my propositions later?

No. Ensure that all additional print work (propositions, bookmark, extra invitations, etc.) is submitted before the approval production.

Can i submit my file in A4?

Yes. We resize (81%) your pdf file to the size of the thesis (17 x 24 cm). More information can be found in our online manual.

I have approved for production but, i see a mistake?

Please contact Ridderprint immediately if you discover an error in your files. If your order has not yet gone into production, we can still replace your file(s)! However, this may affect the delivery date of your books.

Can i get a QR-code?

You can create a QR-code here. Enter this link https://www.publicatie-online.nl/publications/name-lastname (don’t forget the dash! Spaces are not allowed). Download an eps file and png file and use it in your design or send it to your designer. Send the complete link to orders@ridderprint.nl so, we can use it for your online publication.

 

Which colour profile do i use?

As far as possible, deliver the files in CMYK colour mode. Export to a PDF file with the profile ISO coated v2 or Coated FOGRA39. We automatically convert RGB files with this colour profile.

How do i calculate the spine width?

The spine thickness depends on the number of pages and the paper type. Go to the ‘submission instructions’ page in your portal. Here you will find the spine thickness calculator.

Where do i upload my files?

Log into your Ridderprint portal and go to the ‘upload & status‘ page. Here, click the ‘browse‘ button and select your files. Wait until all files are visible in the list.

 

Do i submit my files with cropmarks?

If you work with professional software such as Indesign or illustrator, we would like to see this. If this is not possible in the software you work with, this is not a problem. Just take into account the 3 mm bleed (on all sides) in your file.

Can i adjust my file(s) after the proof print?

Yes. You have time between receiving the proof and approval of the production, to make corrections or pass them on to your designer. We would like to receive the final files as soon as possible, at the latest on the production approval date in your portal.

When do i need to upload my file(s)?

Log into your Ridderprint portal and click on ‘my order‘. View the schedule here to see when you or your designer must submit the files for proofing at the latest.

 

What means ‘final size’?

We cut-off 3 mm off the printed material on all sides. What remains is the final size. Make sure that important text and/or elements are not too close to the edge (safe zone).

What is the ‘safe zone’?

Make sure important text and/or images remains 5 mm within the final size. This margin/space (safe zone) is needed to make sure nothing gets lost after cutting.

What is bleed?

Bleed is needed when your file(s) contains images/elements or colours that must reach the edge of your page. This image/elements or colours must then be placed at least 3 mm over the page edge. See also our online manual for more information.

How do i submit my files?

We would like to receive the files as a pdf files. Go to the ‘submission instructions‘ page in your portal for the specifications of the various files. If you still have specific questions then please contact orders@ridderprint.nl.

What is a thesis specialist?

The thesis specialist is your first contact at Ridderprint with whom you have discussed your quotation. Are you closed in the holiday period?

No. We are still functional during the holidays. Though, this can lead to slightly longer lead times.

No. You have to deal with several people. Your thesis specialist (first contact) is there for questions about your quote, invoice, or ‘how much does foil printing cost’ etc. The order coördinator is there for all your questions about (submitting) files, planning, receiving proofs etc. orders@ridderprint.nl. If you have a layout package at Ridderprint, you will also have contact with a designer.

How quick are you replying my e-mail?

We always try to reply to your email within 1 to 2 days.

How can i contact you?

What are your opening hours ?

We are open from Monday – Friday from 08:00 – 17:00. National holidays we are closed.

Are you open in the vacation period ?

We are still functional in the vacation period (july – August) although the orders have a longer  We are closed on all mandatory public holidays. We work during the holiday period but, orders may have a slightly longer lead time

My printed material is not neatly cut?

That is annoying! We always try to cut your print as cleanly as possible. But there can always be some cutting difference due to fluctuations in printing and finishing that we have to deal with. Do you still think we really didn’t cut well? Then contact your thesis specialist at Ridderprint. In your portal, click on ‘my order‘ and see under ‘contact info‘ who your thesis specialist is. Enclose a photo so that we can properly assess your complaint.

My package is damaged, what can i do?

Contact your thesis specialist at Ridderprint. In your portal, click on ‘my order‘ and see who your tea specialist is under ‘contact info‘. Enclose a few clear photos of the damaged package.

I am not satisfied. How do I make a complaint?

Contact your thesis specialist at Ridderprint. In your portal, click on ‘my order‘ and see under ‘contact info‘ who your thesis specialist is. Please send along with your complaint some photos to clarify the complaint.

How long does it take to apply for an ISBN?

After the application form is received, the ISBN will appear on the ‘specifications‘ page in your portal within about two days. If this is not the case please contact orders@ridderprint.nl first before sending a new request.

What is the release date?

This is usually a date from when your book can be found in (online) bookshops (if you want to sell the book), repository or a library.

Adding ISBN to your file?

Once the ISBN is available, add it into your file yourself or pass it on to your designer. For the print proof, it is not important that the ISBN is present. Just make sure you don’t forget to add it in the final files.

Do i need a barcode for my book?

Only if you want to sell your book. The ISBN can be converted into a globally readable barcode. Booksellers scan this code at checkout and the barcode is used in logistics.

When do i not buy an ISBN?

Applying for an ISBN costs money. If you have written a book that does not need to be sold through a bookstore or online platform, the question is what value such an ISBN adds. For example, consider a book you have written to hand out at training sessions you give. Maybe you have written a book about your family’s history that you want to share only with family members. In such cases, you can do just fine without an ISBN.

Is an ISBN mandatory?

No. An ISBN is not mandatory. If you want to self-publish a book, you decide whether to apply for an ISBN or not. Although an ISBN is not mandatory, many booksellers and online platforms make an ISBN a requirement when they are going to sell your work. For example, the number allows them to keep track of stock very easily. Publishers who store their stock at the Centraal Boekhuis also require an ISBN so that booksellers and libraries can order their books. Ask your university about the rules for an ISBN.

I cannot find a NUR code for my topic?

Then choose a category closest to this. For example, a general category.

What is a NUR code?

NUR stands for Nederlandse Uniforme Rubrieksindeling and is a three-digit code. It simply indicates the main subject of your book. Online bookstores use the NUR code as the basis for category classification. In addition, bookstores and libraries also use the NUR code as a kind of signpost to find a title.

How to apply for a DOI?

Please check with your university to request a DOI. Ridderprint cannot do this for you.

What is a DOI?

DOI (Digital Object Identifiers) numbers are unique numbers that can be assigned to a digital document. The purpose of the DOI is that with the help of this number, the referenced document can always be found online in a standard way, independent of any changes to an Internet address.

Do i need an e-book ISBN?

If you want to sell your book as an e-book through regular online book retailers, your e-book will need an ISBN. If you do not sell your book, or only through your own website or a social media platform, then an ISBN has no added value.

Do you want to publicly publish (i.e. sell) your book through the various channels? Then it is advisable to apply for an ISBN. For books distributed within your own circle, it is not necessary to apply for an ISBN. However, an ISBN is useful to make your book easily findable by booksellers, library or repository.

When can i expect the invoice?

How long does a complete layout take?

A layout of your interior takes about three weeks including a test print. Including printing it is 5-6 weeks for the total process and receiving your books. This also includes additional material such as; cover, extra invitation etc. For urgent procedures, contact your thesis specialist at Ridderprint.

I have a design package. Where do i upload my files?

You have a design package (cover design and/or inside complete (plus). After your order is scheduled by Ridderprint, a designer will contact you in about two days to discuss your design and submitting your files.

I have a layout package cover ‘standard’. What next?

Go to the ‘upload & status‘ page in your portal and upload your example(s), images and other wishes . After receiving this, our designer will start the layout as soon as possible and you will receive a first PDF proof for checking. For more information and instructions, scroll down on the ‘submission instructions‘ page in your portal.

I have a layout package inside ‘standard pdf’. What next?

Once your pdf file is complete, click the ‘start PDF layout‘ link in your Ridderprint portal. Choose your elements and style and follow the steps. Our designer will send you a PDF proof as soon as possible. Once this is approved, we will proceed to make a paper proof.

I have a design package, what’s next?

After Ridderprint has scheduled your order, a designer will contact you within two days to make an appointment for an intake interview. You will discuss your wishes regarding the design and the delivery of your files with the designer.

What are ‘propositions’?

In the Netherlands, along with your thesis you defend a few propositions (about ten). Propositions are statements that are “opposable and defendable” and cover a number of topics. The first few are usually about the topic of your thesis, but the others can cover pretty much any topic.

These last few propositions are usually the most interesting, as they resonate with everybody – not just people who are acquainted with your research topic. It is a way to show your personality, by voicing your concerns about a particular topic, or even by slipping in a bit of humor.

Can i submit my propositions later?

In order not to slow down the process and avoid running out of time somewhere, it is wise to get the proof already underway. After receiving the proof, you can wait for the comments of the review committee and there is plenty of time to apply the corrections. Usually, these are only text corrections and not corrections in the layout of the book.

Can i change the number of copies?

Yes, you can if, we are not printing yet. If you have already agreed for production, please contact your thesis specialist at Ridderprint as soon as possible.

How fast can you deliver the books?

This can be done in 8 working days but depends on a number of things. Do you supply the files ‘ready to print’? Would you like to receive a paper proof first? Do you want special finishing on your cover, etc. Contact your thesis specialist at Ridderprint to discuss the options.

I want to change the paper type. Will it cost more?

For the interior, we have four standard paper types which have the same price. If you want a heavier weight of paper other than the standard paper types, please contact your thesis specialist at Ridderprint.

I want to change my order specifications?

Do you want to put your dissertation online and have articles that have not yet been published? Ask your university about the publishing rules and embargo. Is my online publication getting a password?

Yes. By default, this is your order number that you communicate with at Ridderprint. If you want your own password, send this to orders@ridderprint.nl.

Can i get a QR-code?

How long will my online publication will be available?

There is no time limitation for the online publication.

What is ‘publication date’?

This is the date your book/thesis may appear online.

What is online publishing?

With an online publication package (PDF or Flipbook+PDF), we put the PDF of your book (including cover) online on our website Digital publications. With a link, you can direct people to your book online. See more information on our website Online publishing for the various options.

What is an online PDF?

Your book (including cover) will be put online here Online publishing. This is where people can download your book. Your book is ‘protected’ by default with a password (your order number).

What is an online flipbook?

An interactive flipbook is made of your book with table of contents and which you can ‘realistically’ browse through online. This is put online at our Digital publications site. The flipbook is not a ‘physical’ file that you can download.

Why has my online publication a password?

Due to a possible embargo on unpublished documents. By default, your online publication is password-protected (your order number).

Can i remove my password?

Yes. Send a request to orders@ridderprint.nl. Please note! Your online book will then be public and available for anyone to read or download.

Can i choose an own password?

Yes. Send your self-chosen password to orders@ridderprint.nl quoting your name and order number. By default, your online publication is password-protected with your order number.

What is the difference between an online pdf and complete pdf?

We will create a ‘complete‘ pdf file of your book including front and back cover at no charge. You can submit this to the university library, for example. If you have an online package, we will also put your book online for people to download. See examples on our website.

When can i find my book online?

We will put your book online after a few days, following your approval for production. You will receive an e-mail when this has happened.

The colours of my cover are different?

The colours of the cover can never be compared to your screen. The contrast of your screen is much higher and the colours brighter. This cannot be matched with printing. Also, your cover is coated with a matt laminate that affects the colour.

Is another type of laminate more expensive?

No. We charge the same price for all types of laminate.

Do you print with white ink?

Yes, this is possible. This can also be combined with colour.

Do you do Spot-UV coating?

Yes. We can provide your cover with ‘normal’ spot-UV or with a ‘raised’ thickening variant. This one you feel even more and gives a kind of ‘3D effect’.

What is ‘Perfect bind’?

This binding method is used in 98% of our books. The pages are attached to the cover by means of a special glue.

The colours of my cover are different from my interior pages?

There may be a deviation in colour between your cover and interior . The cover is coated with a laminate that affects the colour. Unfortunately we cannot do anything about this. The type of paper you have chosen for the interior also affects a colour. Some papers differ more than others. Keep this in mind when choosing your paper.

Is my design suitable for a special finishing?

Always have your idea or design reviewed by Ridderpint first to avoid disappointment or problems. We can advise if your idea is possible or if something needs to be adjusted.

Is foil printing possible over the spine?

Yes. If the areas of the foil do not become too large, this can be done well. Let your design always be judged by Ridderprint first.

What is die-cutting?

Laminate. What is it and why?

Laminate is the thin layer of plastic applied over the print. This gives extra strength and also protects the cover from dirt.

What is ‘trimming’?

This refers to cutting to the final size of your book.

What is ‘creasing’?

Before folding, we make a groove in the material to create a nice tight fold.

How do i approve the production files?

Can i receive a second print proof?

If you wish to receive a second proof, an additional charge of €45 applies. Note; After receiving the final files, we always send a digital proof for a final check and approval.

Do i receive a track and trace?

Yes. As soon as the proof is sent, you will receive a track and trace. Check your spam box if, you haven’t received it yet.

I have not yet received approval from the review committee?

That’s right. 95% of these costs are fixed costs. (Making stamps, setting up machines). Unfortunately, it is not possible to do this for one test print.. This applies to; Foil printing, Spot UV. Embossing, Die-cutting and White printing)

Do i receive a proof print?

As standard, we send a physical proof of your book. We send 1 proof to you and keep 1 proof ourselves, so that we know what the result should be when producing the entire print run. The physical proof is optional. You can also choose for a digital PDF proof if it is a rush order or if you cannot receive it by mailbox.

How fast will i receive the print proof?

Usually, the proof print is at the address within one or two days if, the address is in the Netherlands. During the holiday period (christmas), there can occure some delay.

How is my proof print sent?

The paper proof will be sent by DHL as a letterbox post. No need to stay at home for this.

The colours of my proof print are different from my screen?

A monitor displays your colours using light mixing (RGB) this gives the colours a wide range and makes them bright. The printer translates this colour information to (CMYK) for use with ink. Ink mixing has a smaller colour range than light mixing. As a result, the print will always be different in colour. Try to work with CMYK files as much as possible for more predictability in the colour and avoid unexpected colour shifting.

The proof print is not correct?

First check your files for sizing and whether the calculation of the spine is correct (right paper?), is the text on the spine in the center? etc. If this is correct, it is due to the proofing process. Because it is not always possible to set up the various machines correctly for one proof print, there can be a little difference. We will setup our machines correctly before producing. If the differences are very big, please let us know.

Can i adjust my file(s) after the proof print?

Yes. You have time between receiving the proof and approval of the production, to make corrections or pass them on to your designer. We would like to receive the final files as soon as possible, at the latest on the production approval date in your portal.

I haven’t received my proof yet?

Unfortunately, this is beyond our control. Please check the shipping details in your portal for accuracy. Please contact us to discuss whether there is still time in the schedule to wait or whether we need to find another solution.

Can i change the delivery date?

If the specified delivery date is not convenient, it can be moved to another day (not weekends). Later is always possible, earlier is not always possible. Send an email to orders@ridderprint.nl with your request as soon as possible. The earlier the better the chance that it can be done!

Do i receive a track and trace?

Yes. As soon as the proof is sent, you will receive a track and trace. Check your spam box if, you haven’t received it yet.

I (still) did not receive a track and trace?

Your books will be picked up here one day before delivery (end of day) . After this, the carrier will send an e-mail with track and trace, in which an estimated delivery time appears. If you have not yet received this, please check your junk mail first. We may also deliver the books using our own delivery service. You will receive an email with information about this. Unfortunately, we do not (yet) have a track and trace service for this.

Shipping to PO box?

No. Sending books to a PO Box is not possible. For this, we would like to receive an address.

Can the delivery brought forward slightly, if I agree earlier?

If we have an approval for production earlier than the schedule made, we can adjust the delivery date. Please consider 8-10 working days.

Guarantee delivery time?

We are not able to guarantee for a 100% that your parcel will be sent or delivered on time. Of course, we do our utmost every day, but force majeure such as machine breakdowns or problems at the parcel shipper are unfortunately beyond our control.

How long does delivery of my books take ?

Depending on your order specifications, this could be 8-10 working days.

My order has the status ‘expedition’?

This status means that the books are ready for shipment. The books will be collected one day before the delivery date (end of day) in your portal. After the pick-up, you will receive an e-mail with information from the carrier.

I ordered hardcovers but i did not received them?

Hardcovers come directly through our partner. We try to coordinate deliveries on the same date as your softcover books but, it may happen that they arrive a few days later. If this takes longer, please contact orders@ridderprint.nl.

Do you also send books abroad?

We experience many problems with this. We do not do this to every country. Shipping will be entirely at your own risk. Please contact your thesis specialist at Ridderprint to discuss the shipping.

Can my books also be delivered to the neighbours?

Yes. Send the address before the delivery date to orders@ridderprint.nl indicating your name and order number.

Can my books be delivered to multiple addresses?

Yes. We can ship to one additional address at an additional cost.

I wasn’t at home when my books were offered?

If the carrier does not find anyone at home, then the books will be offered again on the next working day (not Saturday). Additional charges will apply for this.

What time are my books delivered?

The books can be delivered between 09:00 – 16:00. Please check your received e-mail with track and trace for an estimated delivery time. If the delivery address is that of an university, the carrier always tries to deliver before 15:00.

Do i receive a track and trace for my books?

The day before delivery of your books, your books will be picked up here (end of day) . After this, the carrier will send an e-mail with track and trace, in which an estimated delivery time appears. If you have not yet received this, please check your e-mail spam box first. We may also deliver the books using our own delivery service. You will receive an e-mail with information about this. Unfortunately, we do not (yet) have a track and trace service for this.

Is a morning delivery possible?

For an additional fee, delivery before 11:00 is possible. Please contact your thesis specialist about this.

Can i pick up my books?

Yes, Please let us know in time. The books can be collected at Ohmweg 31 in Alblasserdam. Please report to HAL 1 (grey cargo door).

Will my books also be delivered on Saturday?

No. Your books are delivered on working days from Monday – Friday.

How will my books be shipped?

Your books are packed in boxes and placed on a ‘mini’ pallet and sealed together with a packing slip with all your address details. Transport is provided by an ‘over night’ messenger called Transmission.

Where do I find my shipping details?

Log into your Ridderprint portal and click on ‘my order‘ and go to the ‘shipping details‘ page. Send any changes to orders@ridderprint.nl.

When do I receive my books?

Without further notice from Ridderprint, you will receive the books on the date specified in your order confirmation and in your portal.
